Today, the Connecticut School Finance Project officially changed its name to the School and State Finance Project and updated its mission and goals to reflect the full breadth of its work and its continued growth.
The new name and mission recognize the organization’s expansion over the past two years into the realm of state finance analysis and research, while reiterating its founding commitment to building knowledge about how schools are funded in Connecticut and moving the state toward a more equitable distribution of education aid.
“As we’ve worked over the past four and a half years to strengthen Connecticut’s education funding system and increase transparency, one thing has been abundantly clear — education funding does not exist in a vacuum” said Katie Roy, executive director and founder of the School and State Finance Project. “Because of this, we’ve expanded our work over the past few years to include analyzing the state’s finances and budget, and believe our name and mission should accurately reflect this growth.”
While independent research and analysis of education funding will continue to be at the heart of the organization and not lessen as a priority or focus, the School and State Finance Project will expand its nonpartisan work on Connecticut’s budget, economy, and long-term obligations, and build on its efforts to develop thoughtful, data-driven solutions that address Connecticut’s state finance challenges.
“Even though our name is changing, our principles and our commitment are not,” Roy said. “We will continue to be the nonpartisan, independent organization that stakeholders and communities across Connecticut have come to know as an accurate and trusted resource for data and information about education funding and the state budget.”
In addition to continuing its commitment to being nonpartisan, independent, and nonprofit, the School and State Finance Project will also maintain its existing leadership, operations, and structure, and remain based in New Haven.
